the idea of motorcycles
Saku-Moto is the result of a lifetime of curiosity.
Saku is Japanese for blossom and the dichotomy of language is similar to the balance I’ve tried to bring to my life - beautiful things that can be used hard. Nothing I build stays pristine because the experience of the design is paramount to me.
I began my career as a photojournalist, seeking beauty in the mundane. I moved to NYC from Colorado early in my career and discovered the strict discipline of still life photography where a single photo was sculpted in painstaking detail over hours or days. To counteract what might have been one of the slowest careers I began racing motorcycles. I advanced from Amateur to Expert in one season and by the next season I was standing on the podium of national races.
Around this time I rebuilt my BMW R90S with the help of the endlessly talented Scott Kolb. The desire to build the machines I raced became my passion. That bike got the attention of BMW and with my racing credentials I became a professional stunt rider for many ad campaigns.
Along the way I learned to weld, fabricate, machine, and build but I never stopped adventure riding across the country. When I moved from NYC to Oregon I was introduced to a landscape that rivaled Colorado (Colorado has Kansas, Oregon has the Pacific Ocean).
Today I build motorcycles on commission, teach riding and photography, and lead adventure tours of the spectacular Pacific Northwest.
